Christine was raised in Kelowna, British Columbia, on the west coast of
Canada but studied at the University of Western Ontario in London,
Ontario. At university she gained much practical experience working on a
range of projects in Canadian ecosystems including an assistantship with
the University of Notre Dame working in the endangered Gary Oak Meadow
ecosystem on an Assisted Migration project. In 2009 she received a BSc
Hons specialising in Evolution and Ecology. She then undertook an
internship with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in St. Andrews,
New Brunswick, spending a year working on an Integrated Multi-trophic
Aquaculture (IMTA) project. This approach to aquaculture focuses on
mimicking a trophic structure within farmed aquaculture sites, allowing
the outputs of one tropic level of cultivated species (in this case
Atlantic Salmon) to provide the inputs to cultivated species at lower
tropic levels (Blue Mussels, kelp, etc.) to reduce environmental
impacts. Christine’s primary research interests lie in projects that
emphasise the human component to conservation and those which explore
alternatives to traditional approaches, with particular regard for the
sustainable use of ecosystems. In her free time Christine loves
travelling, reading and playing ultimate frisbee.
