Margaret Koopman is a Unisa Arts graduate in English and History and has a postgraduate diploma in Library and Information Science from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. She has a Masters in Environment & Development, also from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, specialising in environmental history. Her thesis was on "The diminution of the Mist Belt grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal: an historical investigation of land-use change".

Margaret has worked in academic libraries since 1981 with experience in the Life Sciences, Environmental Law and Business Studies fields. She has worked extensively with electronic resources in libraries, including maintaining the distribution of networked databases on a Local Area Network and was webmaster of the UNP library web page for a few years. She has also contributed to the development of numerous undergraduate and postgraduate information retrieval teaching programmes.
