Anthony van Zyl did his undergraduate BSc degree at the University of Pretoria, his BSc (Hons) degree at Rhodes University and his MSc at the University of Cape Town. He studied the biology of the Rock Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus rupicolus) in the Tarkastad District, Eastern Cape for his Masters thesis.
